2009 Fellowship Cup Results

Offshore Sailing
Offshore enthusiasts with large sailboats will find a community of sailors at the Palm Beach Sailing Club who are interested in cruising and racing. The club is close to the Palm Beach inlet, and there are numerous marinas and spots to anchor around the Intracoastal Waterway of Lake Worth. Many members take positions as crew on the large boats and learn about sailing and racing on the open ocean.

The Fellowship Cup
The Fellowship Cup was created in 2007 by a combined effort of the Castaway's Sailing Club and the Palm Beach Sailing Club to encourage offshore sailors to get out to race in friendly competition. Racing is not restricted to Club members. All sailors regardless of affiliation and skill level are encouraged to participate.

sailboatsThe Fellowship Cup consists of three series of race events held throughout the year. Each Series is contested and scored independently for individual prizes. The "Fellowship Cup" is a perpetual trophy awarded to the Club whose members' boats accumulate the most points during the three series combined. Points are awarded for each finishing yacht.

Three different series consisting of twelve (12) race dates will run throughout the year. Each Series is made up of four (4) events typically held one Sunday per month. Each event may consist of multiple races based on current weather and wind conditions. Races are scored toward individual and Fellowship Cup awards. The Race Committee will determine courses depending on race day conditions.

Three separate fleets include: PHRF (spinnaker), JAM (jib and main), and Multi-hull. Each class will compete for class trophies and be scored separately. In mid-December at a special dinner event, all three of the series awards will be given to individual classes and the Fellowship Cup will be awarded to the winning Club.

The Outside racing area will be in the Atlantic Ocean, starting North or South of the Lake Worth Inlet. The Inside racing area is on Lake Worth, South of Peanut Island. Weather dictates the racing area and it will be announced on event day using Channel 72 no later than one (1) hour prior to the warning signal.

Activities
The Offshore Committee organizes racing and social raft-ups for larger racing and cruising boats throughout the year. sailboatsThere is generally one offshore race per month. Most use various buoys, government marks and prominent shore features. Interspersed are various popular point to point races: Hillsboro to Palm Beach, Palm Beach to St Lucie, etc. More are planned. Our round-the-mark races are designed to give the racing skipper a bit of a challenge and the cruising skipper an opportunity to test his skills against other cruising boats. We do not have a high intensity racing fleet. These seem to have evaporated over the last few years and now the focus is having a good time on the ocean, some fun competition, and social gatherings with raft-ups after the races. We even have practice starts before some races to encourage better starting techniques. During the winter we attempt to schedule races on days that include a high tide in Lake Worth. So if the weather is dusty outside we can race in Lake Worth south of Peanut Island.

The club is in the process of taking steps to dredge the old channel leading to the club's docks. This eagerly awaited feature would allow more onshore social events for the bigger boats after our races.

Come on out and race with us. You do not have to be a club member to participate.
