Your child can learn to sail from the beautiful shores of the Palm Beach Sailing Club, located just north of 45th Street on Flagler Drive. Sailing 101-Starfish & Tuna Pre-requisite: Must be 7 years of age. This goal oriented course teaches younger kids the basic sailing skills and principals. This course is taught in Optimists and 420’s. Curriculum includes learning the names of boat parts, finding wind direction, steering with a tiller, practice tacking and jibing, crisis management, and additional sailing skills. The class enables the kids to become familiar with water safety and dingy sailing, and to feel confident on the water. Novice Opti Racing (Green Fleet) Pre-requisite: Completion of Star Fish & Tunas, or instructor promotion (Sailors should be able to navigate around a triangle racing course and know all points of sail.) This course is designed to prepare sailors for the Optimist Racing Fleets. Students will be introduced to the Racing Rules of Sailing and intermediate racing techniques. Instructors will teach skills sitting on the rail, using tiller extension, roll tacking, equipment care, changing sail controls and sportsmanship. Sailors will practice starting and sailing race courses. Advanced Opti Racing ( White, Blue, Red Fleets) Pre-requisite: Completion of One Year of Green Fleet and must be considered by skill level, age and maturity at instructors discretion. This course focuses on mastery of boat handling skills, advanced racing techniques, fine tuning sail controls, and physics of racing sailboats. Sailors practice using sail controls, body weight and sail theory to make their boats go faster. Sailors will be taught to ask questions about evaluating and learning about their own performance. Sailors will also be encouraged to race all regattas on the schedule. Advanced Racing (Laser Radial, Laser 4.7, Sunfish Fleets) Pre-requisite: application by resumé & approval by Sailmaster. There are strict weight requirements for the boats sailed in this class. Advanced Racing students usually have completed a minimum of two years in the Advanced Opti Classes or have out grown the Opti.
